The World Matters!!

In today's world, where there are so many people, so much competition, and so many things going on, the only thing that separates you from the rest is your knowledge about things. In a country like ours, where there are thousands of engineers, lawyers, marketeers etc, knowledge is key. This week, we'll be focusing on General Knowledge and World Affairs, so that you can learn the art of keeping track of everything that is going on in the country and the world.

We all are aware of the growing importance of general knowledge awareness. Each area requires individuals who are not merely qualified in textual knowledge but have a sound knowledge of the current affairs. General Knowledge is simply keeping in touch with the world, and with today's technology, its very easy. Reading papers, news related websites, magazines and TV are the easiest ways to keep in touch with the affairs of the country and the world.

General knowledge is often tested in many entrance exams. They have become a pre-requisite to clear such exams. They are asked in question and answered format or asked in interviews. It indicates towards the growing importance of general knowledge in our lives. These entrance exams attempt to recruit an individual who is not merely academically sound but also has a high general awareness level. Both textual knowledge and general knowledge are important to make you an intellectual and grown human being.

Thus, we should not merely read books but in order to have practical knowledge of the world; we should read newspapers and watch news. This would give us a clearer perception of the kind of world we live in, and acquaint us with how basic things function around us. In order to get all the information on events of 2011 or 2012, you can search the internet or read newspapers.

Careers with Geography

Geography, despite contrary belief, has a wide range and scope of really interesting careers. If you do really love the subject but think you cannot pursue it because of lack of scope or opportunity, then have no fear, we'll be talking to you about some of the careers that you can pursue.

While there aren't many job titles that are "geographer," there are many types of positions that fit well with a degree in geography. Think about some of the options below as you begin your job search:

1) Urban Planner

With a degree in Geography, you can easily get into Urban planning, and work on zoning, development of areas and renovation of different parts of different areas.  If you're interested in this area, be sure to take urban geography and urban planning classes.

2) Cartographer

We taught you how to read maps, how would you like to make one??? For those with cartography course backgrounds may enjoy work as a cartographer. The news media, book publishers, atlas publishers, government agencies and others are looking for cartographers to help produce maps. This would likely require relocation.

3) Climatologist

Weather channels, national weather services and the news media, need climatologists. One should also have a minor in Meteorology, if this is the career you wish to pursue.

4) Environmental Management

A plethora of environmental assessment, cleanup, and management companies exist throughout the world today. A geographer brings excellent skills for project management and the development of reports like environmental impact reports. It's often a wide-open field with tremendous growth opportunities.

5) Writer

You could be a science writer, a travel writer or even a writer for a magazine or newspaper. Having a lot of knowledge about the world and how it works, there is a lot to write about, and if you have a flair for writing, you could enjoy this as a career.

6) Teaching

Becoming a high school or university geography instructor requires additional education beyond your undergraduate degree but it would certainly be rewarding to instill your love of geography with future geographers. Becoming a geography professor will allow you to research the world of geography and add to the body of knowledge developed by geographers.

These are just some of the careers you can pursue and there are many more. So, if you are really interested in Geography and wish to pursue a career in this field, it is very much possible and you should follow your dreams.

Geography Rocks!!

Welcome back, we hope our map lessons could help you, and today we'll be learning about another important part of geography, which is...you guessed it..ROCKS!!

We need to study rocks, because rocks store a lot of information. They contain clues about what the earth was like in the past, and we can trace the events of the earth, way before humans came into existence with the help of rocks.

Rocks can answer a variety of questions like:

  •  Was there a lake or volcano where the rock was present?
  • Was there a sea?
  • Were there mountain ranges?
  • Was the atmosphere thick or thin?
And many more such questions, which are really important, for knowing how humans have affected the environment, and to understand the world and its existence.

Now that we know, that studying rocks are really important, lets speak about the basics in rock study, which would be in your syllabus in Class 9 and Class 10.

Firstly, rocks are often confused with minerals, however they are different, and this the difference between the two:

Rocks:
A rock is composed of combinations of minerals, each mineral having its own chemical formula and crystalline structure.
Minerals:
A mineral is a naturally-occurring inorganic (there are some exceptions to this) crystalline solid (though mercury is regarded as a mineral) with a specific chemical composition and a characteristic internal regular geometric arrangement of atoms, sometimes expressed as natural crystal faces.

Thus, rocks are complex, as they consist of different minerals and have unique shapes, sizes and concentrations.

Types of Rocks:

Igneous Rocks:
Igneous Rocks are also known as fire rocks, and they are formed either underground or above ground.
Underground, they are formed when melted rock, called magma deep within the earth become trapped in small pockets. As these pockets cool underground, the magma becomes igneous rocks.

Also, when volcanoes erupt, lava is spurted out, this lava on cooling, forms the igneous rocks above ground.

Here are some amazing pictures of igneous rocks :

                Granite

              Basalt

Sedimentary Rocks:
For thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of our earth have been eroded--broken down and worn away by wind and water. These little bits of our earth are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of the rivers, lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.

The study of sedimentary rocks and rock strata provides information about the subsurface that is useful for civil engineering. Sedimentary rocks are important sources of natural resources like coal, fossil fuels, drinking water or ores.

Here are some amazing pictures of sedimentary rocks:

                     Coal                                                Conglomerate

Metamorphic Rocks:
Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". The original rock is subjected to heat and pressure, (temperatures greater than 150 to 200 °C and pressures of 1500 bars) causing profound physical and/or chemical change. The original rock may be sedimentary rockigneous rock or another older metamorphic rock.

The study of metamorphic rocks (now exposed at the Earth's surface following erosion and uplift) provides information about the temperatures and pressures that occur at great depths within the Earth's crust. Some examples of metamorphic rocks are gneissslatemarbleschist, and quartz.

Here are some amazing pictures of metamorphic rocks:

Slate

Marble
