The Magic of the Kannada Language

Kannada is a language spoken by roughly 70 million people world-wide, but mostly in the Indian state of Karnataka, and is one of the 40 most spoken languages in the world. The Kannada Language is truly a magical language, and has a spectacular and somewhat intriguing literary past, which still continues today. In fact, works of Kannada literature have received eight Jnanpith awards and fifty-six Sahitya Akademi awards.

Kannada has also given us some of the most amazing poems to have been written in our country, and with great poets like Pampa, Ponna, and Ranna who are considered as the kings of poets, their work has made our country even richer and has added value to our varied and diverse literature, poems, myths and tales.

Kannada is one of the most unique languages in India, and highly significant as well, for, the first encyclopedia was written in Kannada and later translated to Sanskrit under the name, Shivatatvaratnakara. Apart from being the third oldest language of India, Kannada is also one of the first Indian Languages for which a foreigner wrote a dictionary, known as Shabda Kosha.

Kannada has been developing, both as a language and as a literature for the last 2000 years, and is therefore recognized as one of the classical languages, and it truly is one. We hope you decide to take up learning a second language, and choose Kannada, as it is simply a beautiful language to learn.
