Math Myth: If you don't get the exact answer, you are a failure

Although this maybe the case in the very early foundation years of mathematics, it should be realized that as you grow older and older the answers need to be approximately correct. Teachers tend to look out for the methods, procedures and thought processes rather than just the final answer itself. Therefore, we advise you not to get discouraged if the answers are not exact, since in further studies approximate answers are considered. Maths is a subject best mastered by practice, and you can click here for some amazing maths products for school.

Math Myth: There's one best way to do the problem

If anyone tells you that there is only one way to solve a sum, that is complete nonsense. Maths is a subject which utilizes all your creativity and produce the correct answers with several different methods.

One does not have to simply follow what is given in the text book, and you can explore the various permutations and combinations that go with this truly fascinating subject. It is highly recommended that you develop an understanding of Mathematical concepts rather than simply learn one method by heart, and you can click here to check out some amazing products to help you out.

Why not make your own sweater to beat the chilly winter?

Knitting is an amazing hobby and skill to master and can provide you with loads of satisfactions as well as bring a smile to the people who you make things for. Everyone loves it when their grandmother makes them that special sweater or cap, and apart from bringing joy, knitting can have some tremendous advantages for children as apart from teaching children really complicated maths in the form of practical experience it also teaches kids to visualize a final product and work towards it.

Exam Hour: Time Management

One of the key aspects for doing well in your exams and making sure your efforts have not gone to waste, is definitely completing the actual exam paper itself. Although this statement sounds very obvious, a lot of students do not complete their paper on time, and as a result lose marks on questions which they know, but do not have time to complete. There could be various reasons for this, but we'll focus on how to effectively manage your exam time to complete your paper:

1) Choose Wisely: One of the most important choices you can make during your exams is which option to choose and which ones to leave out. Almost all examinations have options, where you must select the question you find better for yourself. Use your reading time very well, to mentally decide which questions to choose to avoid wasting precious writing time. Another analysis you must make while choosing your questions, is that if you know all the answers, try selecting the questions which would take the least time to complete, so you have more time to revise or go through your paper after you are done writing.

2) Don't know it? Leave IT!!

So many times when you are writing your paper, you come across a question and think to yourself, "WHEN DID WE LEARN THIS???" In such instances, it is better to leave a little space, and go on to the next question without wasting even a moment, as you would rather fill up your paper with answers that you already know really well, rather than think waste time thinking about an answer you do not know, and then writing it not knowing whether it is right or wrong. If you have time after you are done with everything, then you can easily go back to that question and give it a good attempt.

3) Keep a track of time: Sometimes you can get carried away while writing a particular answer. You maybe writing and writing not realizing the time, when suddenly you realize you have only half an hour left and a lot of questions pending to be answered. To make sure this doesn't happen, keep a watch in front of you, right on top of your answer sheet and keep giving it a glance to ensure your writing is on track.

4) Be Confident!!

Lastly, be confident while writing your paper. Be confident with what you have learnt, and are writing currently. This ensures a smooth flow of writing, and no cancellations adding to the aesthetic value of your written paper. So, if you have worked hard and know the answers, there is no need to second guess yourself. GO FOR IT!!

We really hope these tips help you while writing your paper, and you are able to complete it before time.

Eating Tips During Exams

If you’re like most students, test and exam time eating often sends you into a slump. Nutrition becomes a nightmare as you take in your quota of “junk” food. Getting control of your eating during these stressful times is possible though.
Here are some really useful tips for eating during exam time:

 1. Eat small, frequent meals to keep your blood sugar and energy levels steady.
2. Have easy, convenience meals and foods on hand. Avoid living entirely on snacks as they usually won’t energise you as much as a real meal.
3. Choose meals and snacks that emphasise protein over carbohydrates. Protein-rich meals and snacks keep your energy levels even. For example, snack on cheese, crackers and skim milk instead of crackers and juice. Top your pasta with grilled chicken strips rather than pasta and sauce alone. You can even scramble some eggs!
4. Water, water, water! Keep a cup and a litre of ice water at your desk to help maintain your energy. Drink at least that amount of water for every two hours of studying.
AVOIDING EXTRA CALORIES:
1. Make yourself get up to snack. Don‟t bring the snacks to your study place. Eat snacks in the kitchen or another part of your room, away from the desk.
2. Make sure your room/apartment is stocked with healthier snacks. Here are some ideas: nuts, raisins, cheese sticks, low-fat yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat milk, crunchy fresh fruits and veggies (add dip for the veggies), frozen juice bars, hearty low sugar breakfast cereals, oatmeal, low-fat popcorn, protein-rich nutrition bars etc.
3. Remember that thirst can be confused with hunger. Try drinking a glass of water if you are unsure of the origins of your hunger.
4. Only eat when you are physically hungry, not because you’re in need of a study break! When heading for the kitchen, look for true hunger signals, like stomach pangs, to be sure you’re physically hungry.
If you’re not hungry but still desire to eat, take a 10-minute time out and try to figure out what you really need (i.e. study breaks, stress relief, pep talk, etc.) Try to get those needs met without using food. Do something physical to get the blood circulating to the brain.Don’t watch TV for a study break. The commercials for food will send you straight to the kitchen!

Feeling the Math Blues?? Keep CALM and overcome your difficulties!!

Mathematics is a subject which requires a lot of practice and dedication, no matter how intelligent you are. It's not like some of the other subjects where you can just memorize and do well, it needs understanding and patience. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your maths exam:

1) Start solving problems well in advance so you have time to ask your teachers for help and clear some doubts which you may have.

2) Try understanding how the formula is derived, or why you are using it thereby reducing your chances of forgetting it.

3) Take breaks while studying this particular subject as it can get to your head.

4) Go through all the classwork a week or so before your exams. This enables you to revise all that has been done and gives you insight on things you need to practice.

5) Lastly, make sure to get at least 7 - 9 hours sleep before your exam, as you want your mind to be fresh and ready for the exam and not sleepy or saturated.

Another problem which people face with a maths exam is not being able to complete their paper. Here are some techniques you could use to actually complete your paper without any hassles:

1) Understand your Exam:

Make sure you understand your paper pattern and options. This is vital for selecting questions and understanding which questions you will need to attempt.

2) Use your Reading Time:

When you are given 15 minutes to read your paper, do exactly that. Do not look around and throw away these valuable minutes, instead use this time effectively and make sure you know in your mind which questions you are going to attempt in the first 15 minutes itself.

3) Do not worry:

When you've seen tough questions in your paper, do not panic. If you are completely blank then go to the next question and come back once your paper is done. Tough questions are meant to test your thinking ability, so think practically and try to come up with a solution.

4) Ensure Speed and Accuracy:

Use quicker methods in calculations to ensure that you are not wasting time and your answers are correct. Mostly, we take a lot of time to solve a problem if we happen to make some error in the process.

For example, if you make an error in the sign of a term (+/-), you may not be able to solve questions involving quadratic equations or linear equations. Therefore avoiding silly mistakes is very important to save time.

5) Keep an eye on your watch:

Just keep a track of time and make sure you are on schedule and are not spending too much time on one question.

Educating young learners with flash cards are some of the most useful yet underused methods in teaching. One of the biggest advantages of using Flash Cards, is that it appeals to different learning types, as they contain a colorful image, a written text along with a list of activities for the kids. These flash cards, address the visual, the kin-aesthetic as well as the auditory learner, when the teacher reads it out aloud in class. Appealing to all the sections of learners enhances the efficiency of the teaching itself, and enables the students to understand things in a better manner.

Flash cards can really be a useful activity and resource in the class, for revision of words, and learning new vocabulary. Check out some of the best flash cards available, by simply clicking here.

Practicing Worksheets: The key to success

During competitive examinations and tests there is one point of distinction between the elite and the rest of the students, and that is the level of practice. Practice as they say, makes perfect, and that is very true. Simply learning from the text book or your notes, and writing the exam is not enough if you are aiming for the top. You need to constantly keep practicing and keep your mind exercised for those crucial exams. For this reason, we will be focusing on worksheets and how to go about practicing them this week on SkoolShop. First we must know, why do we need to practice these worksheets? How do they help us? Here are a few points to address these questions:

1) Timing Adjustments: Practicing worksheets, and previous years papers, will help you realize how much time you need and for what. Since everyone is different, and each has his own strengths and weaknesses, by practicing worksheets, you will realize in which areas you need more time, and which areas you can make up for that time. This is crucial, as students tend to submit incomplete papers due to lack of planning and time adjustments.

2) Understanding Paper Patterns: Each exam has a particular pattern which is generally the same throughout the years. By practicing worksheets, you get a brief idea of at least the marking side of things, the weight-age of particular chapters and an overview of the subject as a whole from an exam point of view. Although you should be thoroughly prepared and not leave anything out, this understanding of exams, helps you gain expertise in some crucial elements of your particular paper.

3) Speed Gain: By actually drawing diagrams, writing answers and solving worksheets implementing these elements, you gain a little speed, since you are already aware of the answer. When you have solved the sum or drawn the diagram before, it gives a flow to your writing and provides you with confidence that you know the answer.

4) Fills in the blanks: When you are constantly solving worksheets and exam papers, you realize if you have actually missed out on a sub topic or even skipped a topic completely and can go back to it. Worksheets help in filling in the blanks or voids, in the study of that particular subject.

5) Understanding strengths and weaknesses: Understanding these elements are crucial in making the time-table for studying, and deciding how much time to devote for each subject and sub-topic. For example: You could be strong in maths as a whole, yet weak in a small sub-topic, say, quadratic equations. So you can plan to put in more effort towards quadratic equations and make the subject strong all the way through. The only way, to realize which sub topics, you are weak or strong in, is by practicing worksheets.

The importance of English Language

Any language is designed as a mode of communication between different people, and contains symbols as well as vocational words and phrases which help people express themselves. Now, if there was a language which was universal and people in most countries would know it, then that would automatically become the most important language in the world. Thus, the English Language is one of the biggest modes of communication in the world and is therefore highly important. For this reason, Skoolshop will be focusing on English Language tips, websites and videos for the entire week.

Especially in a country like India, where we are competing with other countries, we need to meet global standards and speaking English fluently is one of those standards. Also, when looking for a job, companies hire those people who are fluent in English and have the required skill set over people who are not fluent in English and have the required skill set. So, being fluent in English gives you a competitive advantage, and in a country like ours, with so many people and so much competition any advantage is welcome.

Apart from these work related factors, knowing English will enhance your life and open up so many doors. You can read some of the most brilliant stories and novels, understand some brilliant poems and literary works and watch some of the best movies. There is no better way to learn English than reading. Read books, newspapers, magazines, articles, anything! Reading introduces you to more words, makes you more aware of the world and is one of the best ways to keep learning English and enhancing your knowledge at the same time.

2) Watch and Learn

One of the most fun ways to learn English is definitely by watching movies, shows and other video materials. Watching English movies and shows, or even the news, really improves your vocabulary and vocational skills, as you learn how to pronounce words you otherwise might have been saying wrong.

3) Talk

Just start talking in English, with people who are already fluent in English, so they can correct you when you are wrong, and also that way you will become more confident with the language as time passes, and as with everything, confidence is they key.

Greatest Inventions

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work."

- Thomas A.Edison

This phenomenal quote by Thomas Edison, is not only the philosophy he adopted for the invention of the light bulb, but is also a philosophy of life. You should keep trying and treat failure as a way of how things cannot be done.

Between the years 1878 to 1880, Edison and his team of associates worked on at least 3000 different theories to develop an efficient incandescent light bulb. Hard work always pays off, and he got his first break through in the year 1879 at his laboratory in Menlo park, where the first high resistance incandescent light was produced. The problem was that this only worked for a few hours, and Edison would need all the persistence and patience he had developed over the years, for making the invention feasible.

After trying more than 6000 vegetable growths and using innumerable substitutes for the filament, the break-through was made, while using a carbonized cotton thread filament. And by 1880 he had produced a 16 Watt bulb that could last for 1500 hours.

This is an amazing achievement, especially at the time where there was hardly any technology. There are thousands of great, hard-working and persistent people, who have transformed the world with their inventions and created the platform for the world we have today. You can read about these with this amazing book as shown in the image below:

Get "Claying" this Summer!!

Playing with clay and making your very own shapes and figures is a lot of fun, and can provide you with endless hours of entertainment. Apart from being a fun hobby, playing and working with clay has an astounding number of advantages for kids, and that is why we recommend you buy some clay games for your child this summer. A few of the advantages that this very imaginative hobby possesses are:

1) It teaches kids that all actions will have reactions. When the press the clay softly or hard, the clay gets disfigured in a different manner, and this helps with a very basic understanding of life, where all actions have reactions.

2) It helps kids in the development of their muscles, as they are constantly flexing them while changing shapes and playing with the clay.

3) Clay and its applications require a creative mind, and hence it enhances the imaginative powers as well as the creativity of a child.

4) One of the very important lessons that playing with clay teaches kids, is the lesson on solving problems. Very often, the shapes don't go as per planned, and problems arise, requiring immediate action. Kids will have to think on their feet and solve the problem.

These are just some of the advantages that kids can attain by playing with clay, and we highly recommend playing with clay as a hobby this summer for your child.
